GE Aviation Digital and Teradata: Enabling Digital Transformation

This article is based on a podcast Ron Powell conducted with Courtney Kurtz, director of partnerships at GE Aviation Digital. Ron is an independent analyst and industry expert for the BeyeNetwork and executive producer for The World Transformed Fast Forward Series. Could you provide our audience with some background regarding GE Aviation Digital?

Courtney Kurtz: We grew up out of our GE Aviation Division, which currently runs about $27.5 billion of business this year. We began by providing internal analytics and expertise to our engines business where we were able to see incredible cost savings and benefits out of the analytics that we were providing. From those advantages, we decided to create a division – Aviation Digital – that could provide commercial products for our customers so they could begin to reap the benefits that we were seeing internally.

Courtney, why did you choose Teradata as a partner?

Courtney Kurtz: Teradata adds all the capability for the data management, analytics and answers with their Teradata Vantage platform. That is something that we looked at very carefully. Their brand presence in the industry and the capabilities that they provide were also important. Additionally, in the aviation space, they already had a presence with all the majors. They already had a significant foundation of data that we knew we could collaborate with to create a greater depth of solutions for our customers.

How can your customers leverage the partnership?

Courtney Kurtz: The major airlines that we’re collaborating with have a large amount of data on a Teradata Enterprise Data Warehouse. We are also working with all those major airlines in providing application solutions in their business areas. So there is a natural collaboration between the data that exists in the Teradata platform and the data that we’re extracting via our applications. The first step of that is just marrying multiple sets of data together to come up with greater analytics that can be provided almost immediately to the airlines. Beyond that, there is a greater capability in enhancing the existing solutions that are already there with deeper insights from the Teradata data, and there is additional opportunity to create additional analytics, answers and solutions based on that data and capability.

Are the benefits for the major airlines strictly on the cost side or does it help them on the revenue side as well?

Courtney Kurtz: It definitely starts to help them on the cost side – those are the most obvious. But it also translates into the revenue management areas.

That’s great. Do you only work with the major airlines?

Courtney Kurtz: We don’t! GE Aviation works with every commercial airline that exists as well as corporate airlines and private jets. We also have a division that works with helicopter capabilities.

So you basically support almost anything that flies?

Courtney Kurtz: Yes, anything that flies and anything that we produce an engine for.

Very good. How does the combination Teradata Vantage and GE Aviation Digital enable digital transformation for your customers?

Courtney Kurtz: Digital transformation is a really hot topic these days with basically all customers, but especially in the aviation space. I’ve had different customers quote that they’d like to become a digital company that just happens to fly airplanes. To get there, people are going to need to transform their business from all aspects. You mentioned revenue management and cost savings; however, they’re also going to need to connect their customers all the way through that customer journey and customer life cycle. 

Teradata brings incredible analytic capability and data management and answers to that equation. Aviation Digital needed that capability and the joint partnership and collaboration to be able to start helping our customers lay out that road map and be able to get there with solutions that can enable true digital transformation.

So GE Aviation Digital really has the depth of domain experience that’s required? 

Courtney Kurtz: We absolutely do. We have over 100 years of aviation experience!
