Element to Implement Intellitactics SAFE

Originally published February 19, 2010

Intellitactics and Element Payment Services, Inc. recently announced that Element will implement Intellitactics SAFE, a leading security information and event management appliance. Element, a Level 1 PCI compliant payment company specializes in providing simple and secure processing solutions that dramatically reduce the scope of industry security requirements such as PCI DSS, PA-DSS (PABP) for both merchants and software providers. Intellitactics, an enterprise security management solution company, specializes in automating logging and event management required by PCI DSS. Intellitactics SAFE is a fully capable SIEM on one right-sized appliance. The SAFE appliances, deployed stand-alone or in combination, automate investigation and analysis of security incidents to accelerate remediation.

Element Payment Services has led the industry in PCI DSS compliant solutions since the company’s inception. The Express Processing Platform not only meets but exceeds industry compliance requirements while their suite of secure processing solutions assumes many of the risks and responsibilities of protecting sensitive data.  As the first company to offer Hosted Payments, Element alleviates the need for software providers to have their applications validated for PA-DSS compliance. Element enables merchants to reduce their compliance footprint as well by leveraging the most cutting edge technologies including end-to-end encryption and tokenization.

Element Vice President, Technology, Jeff Scheller is responsible for ensuring PCI DSS compliance and security within Element’s IT infrastructure. “Intellitactices SAFE will allow us to provide even greater system availability to our customers.  When evaluating service providers, one of the requirements was that the solution must allow our systems to easily meet compliance PCI DSS requirements for log management, event correlation and aggregation. We looked at several solutions and were impressed with all that the SAFE LP appliance could do from day one – a lot of event log correlation without an additional charge. There was quite a bit of out-of-the-box capability from a PCI DSS perspective. We saw the correlation and reporting in SAFE to be a big win for Element,” explained Scheller.

Michael Cerick, Intellitactics VP Sales said that Element recognized right away the value of the SAFE LP appliance. “Intellitactics has learned what companies need to be successful from our global financial services companies, from the payment card industry giant Visa and from leading edge payment services companies that we call customers. We took all that accumulated expertise and packaged it in SAFE. There are lots of SIEM choices, but SAFE is the only SIEM appliance where you need just one and you aren’t going to be surprised by some hidden cost to experience the value.”

Intellitactics helps hundreds of companies do more with logs. Besides storing logs for the prescribed retention period, SAFE transforms logs into security events that are aggregated and correlated to improve understanding of control violations, attacks by cyber criminals or malicious insiders. SAFE automates event management and enables proactive threat management and reports which provide the information required to be compliant and secure every day.

Scheller suggests that merchants often don’t understand the many aspects involved in being compliant. “There’s a steep learning curve and capital outlay for companies with PCI compliance requirements. There’s file integrity, intrusion detection and, of course, logging. Then you have to be able to consolidate all this information and make sense of it. For some organizations there isn’t the time or the in-house talent to be successful and for them Element is a perfect solution. We’re committed to provide a resilient and compliant computing infrastructure to these clients,” said Scheller.

For companies that choose to keep cardholder data in house, SAFE LP simplifies and reduces the cost of PCI DSS compliance. Cerick says that many companies are buying SAFE appliances that aren’t even subject to PCI DSS assessments. “What some companies come to realize is that compliance is not the end game. Compliance with one or more standards has made many organizations more aware of security. These organizations choose to implement a SIEM solution like SAFE to secure and protect all company information and to avoid any embarrassing security breaches that could negatively impact their employees, partners, customers and shareholders.”
