Vertica in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant

Originally published February 2, 2010

The Vertica Analytic Database relies on a unique columnar, MPP architecture and pioneering data compression to reduce storage requirements for customers' data warehousing and BI software by as much as 90 percent, dramatically cutting hardware overhead and energy consumption so customers can analyze larger amounts of data at a fraction of the cost. The Vertica Analytic Database can operate directly on that compressed data, delivering query results 50 to 200 times faster than other databases.

In the report, Gartner states: "Today, most data warehouses are mission-critical, serving in an increasingly mixed workload capacity, including as a data source for online applications. 'Deep mining' analysts and business analysts are running more ad hoc but equally complex queries and fast-running tactical queries, each with differing service-level expectations. These differing workloads are all competing for CPU, memory and disk access. At the same time, data latency continues to progress from batch to continuous loading demands."
Being named to the Gartner Magic Quadrant is the latest recognition among several other 2009 distinctions for Vertica, including:

•    ending 2009 with its best year and best quarter ever;
•    more than doubling its customer base and reaching its 100th customer milestone;
•    signing dozens of new deals with its traditional base of telecommunications and financial companies while establishing strongholds within healthcare, retail and Web-based knowledge companies including new customers such as Guess? Inc., Zynga, ForeclosureRadar, Visible Measures and SDI Health;
•    leading the pack of next-generation analytic database vendors in challenging the traditional database and data warehouse players in a recent data warehouse market study from The Information Difference research firm. The Data Warehouse Landscape Q4 2009 report also cites Vertica as one of the top two vendors in overall customer satisfaction.
•    being cited in a Bloor Research report that stated: "Overall, we consider Vertica to be a market leader (in some cases the market leader) for all classes of general analytic warehouses;"
•    announcing a major upgrade of the Vertica Analytic Database in May (v3.0) and again in August (v3.5) with a new FlexStore™ architecture that delivers additional performance gains for a broader range of analytic applications; and
•    being named a "Company to Watch" in TechWeb's Intelligent Enterprise 2009 Editors' Choice Awards, an honor bestowed to an elite class of the most influential technology companies impacting smart enterprises.

"2009 was an exceptional year for Vertica and for the database analytics market in general as enterprises facing tough challenges sought best-in-class access to their most important information," said Vertica CEO Ralph Breslauer. "We are  happy to have been acknowledged by such a reputable force in the industry and will work hard to continue to earn this recognition going forward."
