You make some great points about the value of a micro network. So here is an example of a 9-year-old micro community that has been run by Campbell's Soup: http://kitchentable-campbells.forums.liveworld.com/category/Campbells-Soup/400000000 (full disclosure--my company provides technology and moderation services for the site). Their strategy has been to focus on depth.
