Welcome

Seth Grimes

Welcome to Seth Grimes's Expert Channel on Text Analytics for the Business Intelligence Network.

Text analytics is a set of technologies and processes that aim to discover and present knowledge - facts, business rules and relationships - previously locked in textual form. Text analytics is the emerging answer to the widely recognized "unstructured information" challenge.

Leading organizations in the spectrum of business domains are harnessing text analytics to meet CRM, marketing, reputation management, publishing and competitive intelligence challenges and a broad variety of operational needs. According to Data Warehousing Institute researcher Philip Russom, "Organizations embracing text analytics all report having an epiphany moment when they suddenly knew more than before."

This channel will help you understand text analytics and how it can help you create competitive advantage.

As channel expert, I will cover technology, applications and implementation strategy including how to integrate text analytics with existing business intelligence, data quality, content management and operational IT programs. I welcome your questions, comments, and suggestions. Please contact me at grimes@altaplana.com to share your thoughts.

Survey of Text Mining II: Clustering, Classification, and Retrieval
The development of techniques for mining unstructured, semi-structured, and fully-structured textual data has become increasingly important in both academia and industry. This second volume by Michael Berry and Malu Castellanos continues to survey the evolving field of text mining - the application of techniques of machine learning, in conjunction with natural language processing, information extraction and algebraic/mathematical approaches, to computational information retrieval. Numerous diverse issues are addressed, ranging from the development of new learning approaches to novel document clustering algorithms, collectively spanning several major topic areas in text mining.

BI Search and Text Analytics: New Additions to the BI Technology Stack
This report by Philip Russom details how the expansion of the technology stack for business intelligence (BI) and data warehousing (DW) accommodates two relatively new additions, namely BI search and text analytics. Although each stands ably on its own, the two are related in that they tend to operate on unstructured data. Unstructured data is playing a larger role in BI and DW over time, and that role is today supported largely by tools and techniques for BI search and text analytics.
