Information Governance: Controlling Information as a Strategic Enterprise Resource
by Larry English
Information governance represents the decision making activities for the second-most important resource of the enterprise – its information resources.

When Is Information Quality NOT Information Quality?
by Larry English
If you want a "data quality" or "information quality" process, you must understand and apply quality management principles. This article was originally featured in an earlier Information Quality Newsletter and is being featured again as a reminder of the need for a sound quality management system.

Welcome to the Information Quality Newsletter!

Following are the abstracts of the articles in this issue of the Newsletter. Be sure to read them and let me hear from you.

Information Governance:
Controlling Information as a Strategic Enterprise Resource

This article discusses information stewardship and governance. I begin with a question. Does your organization currently have information governance? Whatever you might have answered, the real answer is a resounding "Yes!" It may not be the kind of governance you want or need, but it is very real. Decisions are made every day that either lead to effective management of information that enhances end-consumer, investor and knowledge worker satisfaction - or to poor management of information, robbing knowledge workers of their time, stealing from investors and over-charging end-consumers to pay for the inefficiencies and "information scrap and rework."

When is "Information Quality" NOT "Quality"
I recently read yet another article supposedly on the topic of "data quality." The article advocated extracting data from source databases, verifying it in a staging area, correcting it in a staging area, transforming it and "certifying" it [as valid according to a set of business rules] and publishing it in a reporting database. This was called "The Data Quality Process."

Featured Survey

Survey on Information Quality within an Enterprise Resource Planning and Information System
Tony O'Brien, a post-graduate student, is conducting a study of information quality within ERP and information systems. O'Brien is a student in the Doctor of Business Administration program at Nottingham Trent University in the UK and a student member of the IAIDQ. His doctoral research is focused upon "creating and sustaining data quality within a diverse enterprise resource planning and information system with particular regard to organizations employing disabled people." O'Brien has carried out a review of the subject literature that together with certain research carried out within his own organization and his experiences over time has enabled him to develop certain concepts, which I would like to explore and test within a data quality expert community. His aim is to conduct a web-based questionnaire survey amongst DQ professionals, with a view to examining the validity of these concepts and collecting any feedback this community is able to provide. The content of this questionnaire is confidential and will be used for doctoral research purposes only. It will not be presented in any format that could be related to any specific individual or organization. Copies of the final summary report will be made available to respondents upon request.
