Today's newsletter marks the launch of my expert channel on the Business Intelligence Network. This channel will cover the myriad aspects of visual business intelligence, focusing on helping you improve the effectiveness of your BI implementations. I believe visual business intelligence is a promising new frontier, and my goal is to provide you with the latest developments, best practices and resources on this emerging field. A link to my channel is provided below – be sure to bookmark it so you can check it regularly.
In this month's data visualization edition of the Business Intelligence Newsletter, I am happy to feature an article by one of the small group of independent consultants and writers, like myself, who specialize in data visualization for the needs of business. Naomi B. Robbins, Ph.D., is the author of Creating More Effective Graphs (2005) and the founder of the consultancy NBR (Naomi's initials as well as the abbreviation for "number"). Naomi's article, Dot Plots: A Useful Alternative to Bar Charts, introduces one of the most simple and useful, yet rarely used, graphs for communicating quantitative business data. Even if your BI software doesn't list dot plots in its library of available graph types, it is likely that you can still produce them with little effort. I produce them often using Excel.
My article this month, BizViz: The Power of Visual Business Intelligence, provides an extensive overview of some of the best visual techniques that are emerging today for analyzing business data. If you are interested in visual analysis tools and techniques, this will give you a good introduction to the topic.
I hope that you are finding this monthly data visualization edition of the Business Intelligence Newsletter informative and inspiring. I believe that this newsletter and my new Business Intelligence Network expert channel are the best resources available for the application of data visualization to the practice of business intelligence. Please take the time to extend your knowledge and participation in data visualization by also visiting my channel, reading my blog and participating in my discussion forum at www.PerceptualEdge.com.
Sincerely,
