Welcome Business Intelligence Newsletter Subscribers

Claudia Imhoff

I am excited and honored to introduce the latest expert, Stephen Few, for the Business Intelligence Network. This special edition of the Business Intelligence Newsletter will be featured monthly with articles about data visualization concepts, practices, tools and techniques, with an emphasis on how to apply them to business intelligence. When done right, data visualization provides the means to extend business intelligence in ways that can directly and powerfully help us make sense and communicate our business data.

Stephen FewFor this month's issue I've written an article, Data Visualization: Rules for Encoding Values in Graphs, which teaches fundamental best practices about using points, lines and bars to encode data in graphs. Many people who produce graphs, including those who specialize in it, have never learned when it's appropriate to use bars rather than lines, lines rather than bars, or lines with points rather than lines without points. These choices make a difference in the quality of the resulting communication.

Each month I will also feature the work of another data visualization expert. This month, I am very happy to introduce Maureen Stone. Maureen is a consultant and author who specializes in the use of color. She focuses on how color should be used effectively in data displays. Maureen has written an article, Choosing Colors for Data Visualization, which I'm sure you'll find informative.

I hope that you will use this newsletter from the Business Intelligence Network as your regular source of information about visual communication and analysis. I would also like to invite you to broaden your knowledge and participation in data visualization by reading my blog and by participating in my discussion forum.

Please continue to use the Business Intelligence Network as your premier source for information regarding Business Intelligence, Performance Management, Information Quality and Data Warehousing Information.

Warm regards,
and

Data Visualization: Rules for Encoding Values in Graphs
by Stephen Few
The use of points, lines, or bars to encode data in graphs should not be arbitrary, but rather based on a solid understanding of the communication strengths of each.

Choosing Colors for Data Visualization
by Maureen Stone
When color is used properly when displaying data, it can significantly enhance communication.

I'll express thoughts about how visual representations of data and visual interaction techniques can be used in practical ways to analyze and communicate business information, and I'll occasionally venture into other areas of business intelligence as well.
