Some great points, Dave. We offer analytics-as-a-service to help companies price and discount more effectively (see Free Pricing Analytics for SMBs).

One of the concerns that we see all the time in this area is security.  In our experience, the biggest threats to sensitive pricing data are employees, contractors, and partners who accidentally or deliberately leak this information.  Putting it in the cloud is generally a big security improvement.

Interesting that your article appeared on December 1.  Coincidentally Vertica announced another customer who has deployed on the cloud the same day.  See http://www.vertica.com/company/news/Localytics-lets-app-developers-glean-real-time-insights-with-Vertica to learn how Localytics uses a cloud-based deployment of Vertica to power its real-time analysis of mobile application platforms such as iPhone, Android and BlackBerry.

Great article Dave. If you're looking for a true customer case study on large scale analytics being done in the cloud, check out what customer ShareThis is doing on the Aster nCluster and Amazon cloud platforms. Getting some really great insights, ultra-fast, on huge volumes of data. Let me know if you want to speak with them.

Great classification of cloud based + data solutions! You ought to check us out, though: http://www.data-applied.com. Along a few providers you've listed, we go one step beyond reporting / dashboards by integrating true data mining capabilities. Also, to address some of the security / compliance issues you've listed, we work equally well on-premise and in the cloud (a lesson we learned while working at Microsoft on Dynamics CRM).
