Windstream to lay off at least 280 workers

Summary
With its acquisition of PAETEC now in the bag, Windstream (Nasdaq: WIN) plans to phase out 280 employees over the next four months. As reported in Channel Partners, 52 of those jobs, which are centered on operational areas such as accounting, human resources, and marketing, will come from PAETEC's former Rochester, N.Y.-based headquarters. As the service provider integrates PAETEC into its operations, Windstream spokesman David Avery said that it could cut other jobs in 2012."This reorganization follows a detailed review of overall functions at PAETEC as part of our integration planning to identify redundancies in corporate staff positions and leverage existing workgroups within Windstream," said Joe Marano, senior vice president of business and financial services, in a statement Thursday. "We remain committed to maintaining a large presence long term in Rochester, including a new office location in Midtown." Although neither former PAETEC CEO Arunas Chesonis nor CFO Keith Wilson chose to join Windstream, a number of other high profile executives have joined the company, including: Doug Derstine, president of equipment services; Bob Moore, senior vice president of applications and development; Todd Lechtenberg, vice president of transport engineering; Kevin Errity, east region president - business sales; Jeff Howe, central region president - business sales; and Sean Baillie, senior vice president of national and strategic accounts. Will HTML5 be good enough for gaming?

Summary
HTML5 has been touted as the save-all for the fragmented mobile OS market. If developers were able to design an app once with HTML5, rather than individually for iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and the rest, they could waste less time tweaking individual updates for each operating system. The problem, however, lies in mobile gaming. HTML5 currently can handle simpler graphics capabilities, but it is not yet able to support some of the more complicated graphics capabilities used in native gaming apps. So what's next? Yota announces LTE rollout covering major regional centres of Belarus

Summary
Yota Bel, part of WiMAX Holding which is the owner of Russian operator Scartel (operating under the Yota brand), says it is looking to develop Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks in major regional centres across Belarus. On 1 December Yota Bel launched its new LTE network in the capital Minsk and in Grodno, covering the central districts of these two cities, and according to Yota vice president Egor Ivanov, has now begun the construction of further 4G networks in Mogilev, Brest and Gomel. Yotal Bel has invested millions of dollars in the project and is looking to reach a break-even point within its first year of operation. TeleGeographys GlobalComms Database writes that the broadband start-up holds 2x30MHz blocks of frequency in the 2.5GHz-2.6GHz bands to deploy its data transmission networks. The Belarus State Commission on Radio Frequencies issued Yota Bel with a licence to use the spectrum in December 2008. Having originally intended to use the WiMAX equipment (standard IEEE 802.16e-2005) produced by Samsung, in 2010 Yota Bel announced it was switching to the rival LTE technology.
