Welcome to my Expert Channel on Analytic Platforms for the BeyeNETWORK. The old assumptions about analytics being performed with tools that talk to RDBMSs are being upended by a new series of data stores optimized for analytics, the use of non-database analytic programs such as MapReduce, and streaming or event processing engines that perform analysis on data even before it is persisted – if indeed it ever is – in any form that data warehouse or database professionals would consider an appropriate format.
The entire space is in upheaval. Software companies are converging on new analytic platforms – some are traditional BI vendors; some are emerging startups with a new storage engine, new analytic techniques or even new hardware assists. Packaged business applications players like SAP and Oracle have purchased leading business intelligence (BI) firms in order to add analytics to their business applications. BI tool vendors like SAS, who sell "horizontal" BI tools to companies in many industries, have added business process applications within specific industries to their portfolios. "Software platform" vendors such as IBM, Microsoft and Oracle, who provide additional software components on which BI solutions are built, such as databases, ETL tools and portals, are adding BI tools, process models, industry models and services into the mix to deliver packaged offerings of their own. Some are in the hardware business; others, like Oracle, have recently moved there, and are building “full stack” offerings with the intent to monopolize “share of wallet” within their customer base. Even storage vendors like EMC are seeking ways to get into the perennially hottest market in IT.
In this channel, I will track the emergence of these new solutions, document case studies of their implementation and success, highlight emerging trends and best practices, and describe the industries and business processes that are among the early targets for these vendors. Please contact me at merv@itmarketstrategy.com to share your thoughts. more >
Welcome to my BeyeNETWORK expert channel that will focus on reengineering healthcare using IT. The immediate catalyst for this contribution to healthcare information technology (HIT) is the challenge we as individuals and as a nation are facing in getting a healthcare system that works for everyone. Here the focus will be on "system" where business intelligence is a key part of the infrastructure that will contribute to transformation. Granted that many things might be considered broken - e.g., millions of people without access to affordable, high quality healthcare - but this channel will resist the temptation to try to "fix" things. "Fixing" keeps the conversation in the thrall of the past whereas the intention here is to create new, future-oriented possibilities. This channel is guided by the principle that a single fact is worth a thousand opinions. But facts are not isolated absolutes. Business intelligence, IT governance, and system building are critical paths to the formation of facts. We will be particularly interested in case histories, success stories, and cautionary tales of what works and what doesn't work in reengineering healthcare using IT. I will also look at related business intelligence issues that go beyond healthcare IT. So let me hear from you and HIT me with your best shot at LAgosta@UChicago.edu. more >
I'm honored to be one of the BeyeNETWORK's channel experts as the resident guru on Customer Analytics & Insight. Our channel will focus on how organizations "capture, manage, analyze and apply actionable customer analytics and insight to improve
performance and to accelerate growth."
Numerous blue-chip companies inclusive of Walmart, American Express, Coca-Cola, Staples, Best Buy, Harrah's Entertainment, Procter & Gamble, Toyota, Hilton International, AOL, IBM and Oracle are among those that believe leveraging business and consumer data is necessary to compete in today's economy. What used to provide a "secret sauce" or competitive advantage to companies savvy enough to exploit the value of customer data within their own proprietary databases has now become necessary to remain competitive in this economically uncertain and commodity-driven global marketplace.
Stay tuned to our channel and learn how you can leverage customer analytics to create actionable customer insight to boost your organization's profitability and performance.
We will share our research, insights and assess multiple technology, application, service and implementation choices and options available to facilitate integration and creation of a successful customer ecosystem. Welcome to the Maureen Clarry Expert Channel on Leadership and Management Channel for the BeyeNETWORK.
There are more than 500 channels available on my TV, and I find myself consistently drawn to a select few. Although I don't tune into
TV regularly, I choose the channels that resonate with my interests and help me to learn, the ones that are entertaining and give me a break from the demands of everyday life. I hope that's what this Leadership and Management Channel will become - a place for you to learn and perhaps reflect on the entertaining and challenging stories related to working with human beings. Technology is definitely interesting, but people? Never a dull moment!
Over 15 years ago, I was inspired by a variety of factors to quit my job at General Electric and become an entrepreneur. Those factors included a conversation with Bill Inmon, an experience of My Best Project and a book by Charles Savage called Fifth Generation Management. My business and network of business intelligence contacts have grown extensively, and the knowledge and experience that continues to be shared is depressing, inspiring, practical and thought-provoking. Networking continues to be a key value, and I hope you'll share your leadership and management experiences, stories and questions by tuning in to this channel and/or contacting me at mclarry@connectknowledge.com. more >
Hello! And welcome to the Barry Devlin Expert Channel for the BeyeNETWORK. Those of you who recognize the name will know me as an old hand at data warehousing - dating back to even before the well-known "fathers" of the topic. Over 25 years ago, when I
created my first data warehouse architecture, success was getting the same answer to the same query asked by two different departments. These days, business demands much more: consistent answers for sure, but also timeliness, flexibility and speed across the entire information resource of the business. And technology can do so much more too. I believe these changes are fundamentally reinventing business intelligence, and in this channel I will be pushing you to consider new ideas within and beyond the boundaries of traditional business intelligence (BI) to see how you can recreate your world. Please feel free to email me at mbarry@9sight.com with your comments or suggestions on how I can provide the most relevant information to you. more >
Welcome to the BI in the Trenches - the Steve Dine Expert Channel for BeyeNETWORK.com. In this channel, we will be covering all aspects of business intelligence (BI) - not from text books, conference material or vendor white papers, but from where theory
meets reality…the trenches.
In the trenches, "best practices" aren't always best and, yes, we often need to stray from well known architectures and frameworks. In the trenches, there isn't one best database, ETL tool or BI suite in the market. In the trenches, master data management (MDM) is more of a political challenge than a technical one. In the trenches, on the ground experience reigns supreme, and there is only one measure of success: delivering value to the customer via flexible, maintainable and scalable BI solutions.
We will be addressing all areas of BI, from requirements analysis through delivery including the people, processes, architectures and technologies. In the trenches, feedback and ideas are encouraged so please participate early and often.
If you have any direct questions or comments, feel free to email me directly at sdine@datasourceconsulting.com. more >
Pssst! Get in here! Good, you're here. Welcome to my expert channel on customer data integration (CDI), master data management (MDM) and data governance. We’ve been waiting for you.
As you've probably heard, customer master
data – its management, its deployment, and its governance – is a hot topic these days, not only for business intelligence (BI) professionals, but in the executive dining room and around the IT water cooler. MDM and data governance are challenging the standard paradigm of how to provide a consistent and trustworthy view of customer information. It’s nothing less than disruptive, and it’s causing quite a stir in IT architecture and application developer circles, too. We’ve watched CDI hubs serve as the seminal effort for launching initiatives around master data management, deploying service-oriented architectures (SOAs) and beginning information center of excellence initiatives. A few brave execs are even revamping their enterprise CRM strategies around emerging MDM capabilities, and some data warehouse teams are looking hard at where their future investments are going. But mostly, we’ve watched MDM become a bona fide and permanent part of corporate infrastructures, driving significant business payback.
There are lots of different ingredients in the data governance recipe. We’ll whip up some tactics for what it takes for both the IT and business sides to collaborate. We’ll toss in some best practices and offer some real-world examples of companies that are doing things right. We’ll thicken the sauce with decision rights and accountability structures. Of course, data stewardship is a staple, so we’ll throw that into the pot. We may even bring some vendors to a boil. And by dinnertime, we’ll have a veritable bouillabaisse of data management topics to sample.
So now that you’re here, pull up a chair. And if you’re game, weigh in by e-mailing me at jilldyche@baseline-consulting.com. Glad you could make it.

Welcome to my Expert Channel on Text Analytics for the BeyeNETWORK.
Text analytics is a set of technologies and processes that aim to discover and present knowledge - facts, business rules and relationships - previously locked in textual
form. Text analytics is the emerging answer to the widely recognized "unstructured information" challenge.
Leading organizations in the spectrum of business domains are harnessing text analytics to meet CRM, marketing, reputation management, publishing and competitive intelligence challenges and a broad variety of operational needs. According to The Data Warehousing Institute researcher Philip Russom, "Organizations embracing text analytics all report having an epiphany moment when they suddenly knew more than before."
This channel will help you understand text analytics and how it can help you create competitive advantage.
As channel expert, I will cover technology, applications and implementation strategy including how to integrate text analytics with existing business intelligence, data quality, content management and operational IT programs. I welcome your questions, comments, and suggestions. Please contact me at grimes@altaplana.com to share your thoughts. more >
Welcome to my expert channel that focuses on the practice and technology for business intelligence (BI) and data warehousing (DW). We are experiencing a rapid change in how BI/DW is being used within corporations, globally both large and small.
When I was first involved, we called it decision support systems, affecting only executives and using time-sharing services over 300-baud modems. IFPS from Execucom was the latest and greatest. Financial analysis was the extent of business intelligence, and manual data entry was the extent of data warehousing. We could not even spell “terabyte” back then. Oh, has a lot changed!
What are the key issues with business intelligence and data warehousing? I am focusing on the issues surrounding these topics: business value of low latency data, real-time business intelligence, data warehouse appliances, use of virtual world technology, ethics of business intelligence and globalization of business intelligence. If any of these are vital to you, subscribe to my channel. Please submit your comments on my articles and blogs. Your thoughts are important and should be shared with our BI/DW professional colleagues. Further, you can contact me directly via email at richardh@bolder.com, via Twitter at www.twitter.com/hackathorn or via LinkedIn at "Hackathorn." more >

Welcome to my BeyeNETWORK expert channel on Database Design Techniques.
If you are contemplating, designing, building or maintaining a business intelligence environment, you are (or will be - or should be!) thinking about database
design. Database design affects: how long it takes to load the structures, how easily you can (or cannot) maintain the structures, how much duplicate data (and hence data that will have to be archived at some point in the future) you will keep, and how fast your queries will run (or not!).
This channel will devote itself to weeding through the different design theories and practices, discussing the pros and cons of each. I will breakdown design questions (How would you design…?) and offer possible solutions. We will dig into the four questions above and many more.
I value your opinions and would love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me at chuckkelley@usa.net.

Welcome to my expert channel on data integration for the BeyeNETWORK.
You're probably familiar with the narrow definition of data integration - that it is merely extract, transform and load (ETL) tools used to move data and transform it into a common format in a data warehouse. I prefer to think of data integration as the processes that transform data into business information.
So, why should you care about data integration? It's no secret to IT managers that enterprise information is not treated as a strategic asset. To add to the frustration, this means that no comprehensive information architecture and management strategy is designed and followed. It's not that IT isn't trying to convince senior management that information is a strategic asset; however, it can be difficult to quantify the business benefit. Additionally, sometimes it's impossible to incorporate the information architecture in your plans when deploying various business applications.
Given these challenges, how do you turn data into a strategic asset? How do you enable your business users to find the "single version of the truth?" Integrate data across the enterprise.
This channel will help you understand the challenges of data integration and learn how to tackle them so you can increase the ROI of data in your own enterprise. more >

Welcome to my BeyeNETWORK Expert Channel on virtual data warehouse architectures and the data delivery platform.
The last twenty years, the classic data warehouse architecture has served us well. But if we think about the new demands and requirements from our customers, such as real-time data warehousing and increased flexibility, and if we consider new technologies, ranging from data warehouse appliances to mashups, the question we can ask ourselves is whether this is still the best architecture we can come up with. My answer would be "No."
This expert channel will focus on a new architecture called the data delivery platform. The data delivery platform is based on the concept of a virtual data warehouse. This channel will help you understand the data delivery platform, how new technologies make it possible to develop this platform, and the design and architectural principles of the platform.
In a nutshell, the end of the era of the classic data warehouse architecture has come, and like with all other technical solutions and technologies, it is time for a replacement.
As channel expert I will cover technologies, ideas, tools and design principles related to the data delivery platform and virtual data warehouses. I do welcome your questions, comments, ideas and suggestions. Please send them to rick@r20.nl. I am looking forward to lively discussions. more >
