This article is based on a podcast Ron Powell conducted with Imad Birouty, director of product marketing at Teradata. Ron is an independent analyst and industry expert for the BeyeNetwork and executive producer of The World Transformed Fast Forward Series. His focus is on business intelligence, analytics, big data and data warehousing.
Imad, we’re going to talk about Teradata Vantage. What is Vantage?
Imad Birouty: We should start off with where the world is today with data and analytics. Data is everywhere and expanding. We heard it in one of the keynotes at Teradata Analytics Universe from Oliver Ratzesberger. He talked about how much data is being processed. There are different types of data from different sources, and everyone wants to do analytics. That’s the hottest topic in the market. Everyone wants to do analytics so you need a way to handle all the data and all the different types of analytics.
Vantage brings together the technologies and the capabilities to enable analysis on all the data. Vantage brings together the best analytic functions and engines – all the analytic engines and the functions you need to process the data. When you bring those together, you can see patterns. You can see data and trends that you couldn’t see before, especially when you’re utilizing machine learning, graph, and path and pattern analysis. Bringing the best functions and analytic engines together is one piece of Vantage.
Another benefit of Vantage is giving users the tools and the languages that they need. There are lots of users. There’s the business analyst, of course. There are also data scientists and developers. There are business users, knowledge workers and executives with dashboards. You want to be able to give them the tools and technologies that bring all of them together so that they can do their work on their own terms.
The third benefit of Vantage is enabling analysis on multi-structured data. No longer do we just have rows and columns and structured data. We have multi-structured data coming in from all over the place. When you bring those three together – the functions and engines together with the tools and the languages with the multi-structured data – you can take and process all of this data that’s around us. You can do more than just analytics. You can look for the answers that really drive the business value. And, bringing all of those technologies together seamlessly is what Vantage is all about.
So is this new and different in comparison to how we did things in the past?
Imad Birouty: Birouty: It is. In the past companies were the systems integrators. They had to make these things work together. They had to make the technologies talk to each other. The output of one tool had to talk to the input of another tool and so on. And what is new and different with Vantage is the level of integration. The tools are seamless. The analytic tools work with the analytic functions that understand the different data types. There are no silos. Any function works with any data type. This level of integration to where it’s plug and play and giving the users access to these is a big differentiator.
Also, when you have different users across the organization, you want them all working from the same data. You want them all working from the same analytics. So if I’m a data scientist or a business analyst who discovers a new trend or a new technology and I write an analytic for it, I want to be able to share that and pass it along to the next person who is going to run that analytic against the same data set and have the same functions and engines available to them – not having to rewrite and recreate. The shared environment of shared technology – that integration – is really what is new and different.
It increases collaboration, reuse and productivity.
Imad Birouty: It really does.
Does Vantage replace the Teradata Database? And why the change?
Imad Birouty: Teradata has been known for the Teradata Database – the crown jewel of the company – for 40 years now. Vantage does replace the Teradata Database. It’s actually a promotion for the Teradata Database. Although there is the value in the history of the Teradata Database, the term database itself is somewhat limiting. When people hear database, they think of rows and columns of data, requisite fields. They think of highly structured data that is highly organized and cleansed. What the Teradata Database has turned into is much more than that. It’s running procedural languages inside the database. It’s running scripting languages in the database. It’s running advanced analytics through SQL, pattern, path, attribution, 3D geospatial time series and what we call 4D analytics. This is so much more than a database. It’s really a general purpose analytics processing engine. It was time to go beyond the boundaries of what a database is and rebrand it.
In addition to the Teradata Database getting a promotion, we merged in what we had with Teradata Aster. We brought in the machine-learning engine. We brought in the graph engine. We brought in 180 advanced analytics functions and made all of these work seamlessly together. Those are the reasons for the change.
How do customers upgrade from the Teradata Database to Vantage?
Imad Birouty: The good news is that this is not a replacement. It’s as easy as a software upgrade. It is just a simple software upgrade, and they’re going to have these tools available to them – all the modern analytic techniques, all the in-memory processing.
Now, there is a benefit to doing a software and a hardware upgrade. Not only do you get more processing power and modern hardware with the modern functions of the new chips, but with the new hardware, you also get the machine-learning and graph engines, which run on their own servers.
So there’s no rip-and-replace. It’s not a wholesale replacement. For customers, it’s merely an evolution. We’ve done all the hard engineering work to make this happen so customers can push a button, upgrade the software and then have all the capabilities available to them.
It’s an exciting time.
Well, Imad, making things easier for your customers is always what they want. It was great to be talking with you today.
