I have to admit that over the last few decades (ouch), I've focused on enterprise level data management implementations. Those implementations have often had one similar challenge, the root cause of which has been traced to "clarity of terminology." Have you ever heard: "Your customer metrics are all wrong?” or “That's not the right definition of a customer.” or “We have 4 or 5 different definitions for customer." At a recent tutorial I conducted on the Business Glossary, one person noted that due to mergers and acquisitions over the last few years, they had 23 different glossaries. Few have the same definitions, and many conflict with each other. Sound familiar? If so, stay tuned to his channel. One of the reasons for this might be that data warehouse realization seems still to be a handicraft art instead of an engineering science.
Today, we are living in a "big" time. There is lots of talk about "big data," from data warehouse teams, industry pundits and vendors. That is fine. It would be old-fashioned to ignore the impact of “big,” especially big data, and what it means for our data warehouses. However, before we effectively embrace "big," we need to make "small" things sound.
Thus, I consider the mission of this channel to be bringing about an engineering scientific renaissance to "Data Warehouse Realization" in order to build a solid foundation for a real "big" jump.
With my first article series Start Small: Single Version of the Definition, we should have an accurate enterprise data warehouse definition and know quite exactly WHAT is to be realized. This is a small, but good start. The major remaining questions are HOW to effectively realize it and WHY in the chosen ways. The last twenty years, the classic data warehouse architecture has served us well. But if we think about the new demands and requirements from our customers, such as real-time data warehousing and increased flexibility, and if we consider new technologies, ranging from data warehouse appliances to mashups, the question we can ask ourselves is whether this is still the best architecture we can come up with. My answer would be "No."
