Gnomedex 7 - Travel can be fun

Every once and a while you find hidden gems while traveling. The more time I spend in Seattle the more I seem to find. Saturday night I visited the Pike Street Market area, I was on a quest to locate a shop that I have come to love from a distance. My good friend Andreas recently introduced me to the wonders of Uli's Famous Sausage. In his words "its better than any sausage he can find in Germany". We recently had Uli's shipped to Colorado so Andreas and my family could enjoy a feast. I highly recommend Uli's its well worth the shipping fee.

After wondering around the market I stumbled on the Pike Place Bar and Grill it overlooks Uli's and the famous neon sign at the market. Have you ever visited a restaurant thats decor and vibe over shadowed the food? Thats what Pike Place is all about, Boston and the Doors on the jukebox, a little dusty, a little worn out, great service, fantastic chowder, my favorite bourbon and a $19 rib-eye. Put Pike Place Bar and Grill on your list when you visit.

Gnomedex 7 - Cali Lewis and Cool Dad Points

gnomedex.jpg

It doesn't happen often but occasionally I earn "Cool Dad Points" with my 14 year old daughter Amanda generally the easiest route to this accolade is by purchasing her clothes or cool electronics like a cell phone or iPod. More often than not I earn "Bad Dad Points" by my embarrassing parental comments and general uncool adult behavior.

Recently Tamara Dull posted a piece at her blog about my SecondLife (SL) exploits, its a fun read. While I don't think that SL is ready for prime time I do enjoy watching it evolve. Anyway, a while back I attended a meet-up in SL hosted by Cali Lewis the host of Geek Brief an extremely popular video podcaster. Each episode is watched by over 400,000 viewers. In short Cali is pretty famous. During the SL meet-up I (virtually) introduced my daughter to Cali and they chatted for a couple minutes (big cool dad points).

The interesting thing was how my 14 year old perceived the meeting, in her mind she had actually met the real Cali Lewis not just her avatar. It really makes you think about how SL could impact business and community in the future.

So back to "Cool Dad Points"....
The Gnomedex event that I am at allows me to meet and network with the many thought leaders on the Internet and yes occasionally earn "Cool Dad Points".

Gnomedex 7

gnomedex.jpg

To continue my quest to convince all of you that I am a geek I am attending Gnomedex again this year. Its a unique event hosted by Chris Pirillo of Lockergnome attended by some of the most influential bloggers and technologists on the Internet (I am not included in that group). The event delivers a mixed group of content covering everything from Guy Kawasaki speaking on how to be an technology evangelist to Justin from Justin.tv talking about the perils of wearing a realtime webcam 24 hours a day.

In true Web 2.0 style you can watch a live feed of the event at uStream.tv.

Sitting in Seattle

Gnomedex wrapped up last night with a party sponsored by Microsoft. The event was held at the Experimental Music Project (EMP) located near the base of the Space Needle. I got a personal tour of the Seattle Music wing of the EMP from Dave Derderer guiarist for the Presidents of the United States. Daves roots in the Seattle music scene go back long before the emergence of Nirvana and Heart. It was a little surreal to be chatting with a guy who's guitar, picture and videos were playing in the display. Dave treated us with an imprompto jam session upstairs along with Doug Kaye and another Gnomedex attendee.

To top off the evening I won a U2 edition video iPod, more on that in my next pst.

John Edwards - Gnomedex part 2

I have to admit John Edwards was a pretty good sport yesterday when he joined us here at Gnomedex. Putting a politician in a room with 300+ hard-core technology experts can be a tough place for a guy like Edwards. Many of the questions posed were non-political and occasionally laced with colorful language. Edwards took it in stride and even agreed that he needs to work harder to speak like a real person instead of a political candidate. I commend him for embracing internet technologies such as blogging and podcasting to get his message out.

The following picture ran in this mornings edition of the Seattle Post Intelligencer:

Senator John Edwards at Gnomedex

Senator John Edwards is speaking to the group here at Gnomedex today. The great news is he didn’t take credit for the Internet (see Al Gore). Its interesting that when the Senator agreed to speak the national press demanded access to the event. I commend Chris Pirillo for holding the line and keeping this conversation with the Senator just for the group.

The Senator is in favor of Net Neutrality for those of you who have not heard of this topic prior to this post I urge you to look into it. The large telcom companies are pushing for restrictions on Internet bandwidth so they can charge more to some companies to carry content and less to others.

Edwards is doing a great job with this very vocal group. I’d urge you take a look at the feed that’s available online if you would like to see this very engaging and frank discussion.

RSS Day

Its RSS Day here in Seattle Washington so says the governor. While we all know most states extend this tribute to everything from lawn and tractor day to hot dog day I think the interesting thing is that RSS was on the radar at all. RSS is quickly coming of age and is now part of effective communication and information delivery. If you have not tried RSS yet download a reader and embrace RSS day.

Gnomedex 6.0

I am at Gnomedex 6 in Seattle today. Its a fantastic technology show hosted by Chris Pirillo. Gnomedex has become an annual summit for the leaders in the Web 2.0 culture. I'm looking forward to hearing about the newest trends in the space and meeting the many thought leaders who attend the event.

An example of how this conference differs from what you generally attend picture 300 geeks in a room EVERYONE has a laptop out and is either blogging or vlogging live from te keynote. The clicking sounds coming from this room is crazy.
