Innovation and Consistency

My last piece regarding the Informatica World show. Thank you to everyone for thier help and hospitality. I enjoyed the meetings and sessions as well as getting to know a few of the customers. I also had a great time with Jim, Nancy and John at the Buena Vista and riding the cable cars. My final thought on the week is that all is well at Informatica and consistency and innovation seem to be the words that stick with me. I received briefings on the upcoming product releases code named Hercules, Devinci and Galileo all seem to be right on target. Informatica has done a strong job implementing the technology from the Similarity Systems acquisition into the platform and the focus on software as a Service (SaaS) is a very interesting solution for a data integration company.

My last word on Innovation is one of congratulations to this years winners of the Informatica World Innovation awards.

Lets not just do stuff

Wise words from Brocade CIO Marti Menacho. It seems its a bit of a mantra for her and the team at Brocade. A six year long client of Informatica's they have recently added an additional solution with the adoption of the PowerCenter Connect for Salesforce.com product. Marti's team is supporting 800 salesforce users and is looking to grow how they use the solution. They recently added their service sales team to the application and see a future use in other departments going forward. I asked Marti what drove the decision to add more from Informatica the answer was consistancy, strong platform and past experience.

When asked about recent buzzwords in the industry comparisons of right time and real time, information on demand and others Marti's response is that at Brocade "we don't just do stuff", we try to avoid that pitfall and focus on the things that drive our company so when these things are brought up we can strategically implement what the company needs instead of getting tied up in projects that we don't.

Marti shared her thoughts with the audience at Informatica World last week. She's pictured 2nd from the right during the CIO Discussion Panel.

Informatica World - Day 2....so far

First off I can’t believe the weather here in San Francisco. I always wear a jacket at night and often during the day when I’m here. Its been nothing short of fantastic all week.

The Informatica World show continues to be fun and educational here are a few recent highlights.

Partner / expo floor – Huge partner and vendor support for the show. Many of Informatica’s key partners have significant presence here. I saw friends from Sun, Core Integration, Myers & Holum, Netezza and Composite Software.

Market directions – I had a great chat with Karen Steele Vice President of Corporate Marketing part of our conversation center around whether the move to Software as a Service (SaaS) would alter Informatica’s approach to the market. In the past they have been almost exclusively aimed at the fortune 2000. Karen indicated that Informatica will stay on course and continue to focus on the top level companies. The PowerCenter Connect for salesforce product will open more opportunities for Informatica’s partners.

We’re going out on the town this evening Informatica is hosting a dinner at McCormick & Kuleto's Seafood Restaurant at Ghirardelli Square so if you want me to bring back chocolate you better email me now.

The Future of Software

Marc Benioff Chairman and CEO of Salesfoce.com did a great job this morning here at Informatica World outlining the Future of Software. Overall I had to agree with much of what Marc covered. It’s a highbred version of what makes up WEB 2.0 but is more closely directed to how Software as a Service (SaaS) is defined.

salesforce.jpg

Here is a quick overview of what Marc feels makes up the 10 requirements for software of the future

1. Multi-Tenant, Shared Systems – Using a single instance of an application to serve customers.
2. Trusted Reliability and Performance – Must have 99.9% and sub 300 Milliseconds per transaction. Has to be a transparent service
3. Democratization of Enterprise Applications –needs to serve 1 – 10,000 users all in the same fashion
4. Metadata-Driven Customization – The ability for SaaS users to define and customize the application – Language, business terms etc.
5. Mash-Ups –Leveraging the community and other services seemlesly into the application (see www.housingmaps.com or www.flickermap.com )
6. Web Services-based Integration – The web service API must be standard based to achieve the snap on functionality and collaboration demanded
7. Development as a Service -See my previous post on Informatica’s PowerCenter Connect for Salesforce.com
8. Application Exchanges - The ability to add and embed applications quickly and easily (www.konfabulator.com )
9. Multi-Application Delivery – The ability to define access to applications and bundle them together to suite the needs of users on the fly.
10. Multi-Device Delivery – Write the application once and run it everywhere, Blackberry, Palm, KDDI/Brew etc.

While much of this is easily seen in Salesforce.com Marc gave a few other places that are embracing the same approach to business software.

The question is will we all be using this type of application soon? I think we will.

Informatica World Update

Good morning, I am traveling again today. This week it’s the Informatica World show in San Francisco. The conference is off to a great start with a keynote from Chairman and CEO Sohaib Abbasi covering Data Integration for the Enterprise and the Business Web followed by his friend Marc Benioff Chairman and CEO of Salesforce. I’ll cover the contents of the speeches later today.

The biggest news coming from the show is the announcement of PowerCenter Connect for salesforce.com. I got a sneak peak at the new technology strategy last week from Ivan Chong, Vice President of Product Marketing and Ash Kulkarni, On-demand Marketing Manager for Informatica. It continues along the lines that the company was focusing on over a year ago taking into consideration the new ways companies are sharing and leveraging data coupled with the strategy that software as a service is the future of the industry.

Users of the salesforce.com solution will be able to seamlessly utilize an enterprise class data integration solution right from the AppExchange platform at salesforce.com. The environment is completely codeless and aimed at users who are not a typical data integration power user. The functionality includes the ability to migrate, cleanse, replicate and synchronize data between Salesforce and data behind the corporate firewall.

Informatica launches PowerCenter 8

Informatica has rolled out what promises to be their biggest upgrade to PowerCenter. I met with Karen Steele Vice President of Corporate Marketing along with Jason Khoury Public Relations Programs Manager to get the details. The list of new features is pretty long so I'll touch on a couple here and give you a few links to other resources.

PowerCenter 8 focuses on universal access to enterprise data and features some great unstructured data features that include industry standards templates such as HIPAA, ASTM and others along with access to PDF, PPT Excel and others. Other upgrades include mission critical deployment features, my favorite is "Pushdown Optimization" this allows you to decide where you want the work to be done by bringing the process to the data or the data to the process a powerful tool that I'm sure many people will enjoy. And lastly, they have added more support for global IT groups with Java transformation support.

PowerCenter 8 is available in December 2005. It's an incredibly strong offering.
