LogiXML Launches Version 8

I got a full briefing on the new Logi 8 product last week and I have to say that I am impressed. LogiXML is doing things a bit differently than the rest and it adds value for the customer. The LogiXML solution is completely web based can save a company upwards of 80% when compared against other providers in the space and with this launch offers a complete full featured integrated BI stacked solution.

LogiXML has been in the market since 2000 and has a large user base. They tend to take the development cycle quite seriously and are almost always making improvements to the system. The new Version 8 brings together their 4 main products Logi 8 Ad Hoc Reporting, Logi 8 Info, Logi 8 Mart, Logi 8 OLAP Reporting into a fully featured BI architecture.

I recommend that you include LogiXML on your short list when comparing vendors in this area. LogiXML is competitive feature for feature with the more prominent enterprise class names in the space.

lava-logo.jpg
Celequest continues to innovate in the world of dashboards and business intelligence. They blazed a trail 8 months ago by launching the first Dashboard Appliance a bundled hardware/software solution designed to put business intelligence in the hands of more users. Apparently it worked! because this morning they announced several new solutions a managed solution that places the LAVA appliance behind your firewall connected to your data along with remote administration and management from the Celequest team as well as a hosted solution that places the appliance in a data center operated by Celequest a perfect fit for midsize companies with limited IT resources.

Criminal Predictions

In the movie Minority Report Tom Cruise plays a detective who uses the forecasting ability of three psychics to determine when and where crimes will be committed thus almost eliminating crime.

It looks like the folks at SPSS thought it would be a great business intelligence application. They are launching a map-based application that forecasts the locations most likely to experience crime in a specified time period based on historic and current criminal statistics.

The data to analyze where the local law enforcement agency should best deploy officers is pulled from records management systems and database repositories.

I'll be interested to see what the reduction in crime is after the system has been in place for a year.

Changes in DW Appliance Land

It's been an interesting week in the world of data warehouse appliances and the solutions that power them.

UK based Whitecross and Kognitio have announced a merger. I spoke with the new CEO of Kognitio Roger Llewellyn this morning and found that their new strategy will have a positive impact on the market going forward. They are financially strong and have a solid line up of customers that include GE Financial, British Airways and CNN. This market that already includes Datallegro, Netezza and GreenPlum should get pretty interesting in the coming months.

While at TDWI World Conference this week it was announced that our friend Kim Stanick Vice President of Product Marketing for Datallegro has left the company for a new position with Jill Dyche's company Baseline Consulting. We wish her the very best and look forward to working with her in her new role.

Have a great weekend!

CSI is moving faster than a speeding locomotive

Wow, Conversion Services International (CSI), is really on a roll. A couple weeks ago they sold Evoke to Similarity Systems then turned around and grabbed William McKnights company, Mcknight and Associates. This week they announced the acquisition of professional services firm Integrated Strategies.

This is probably not a good week to ask any of the M&A folks at CSI out for a long lunch.

The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

The title of this blog post is actually a quote by Alan Kay. According to a post on Slashdot It appears that HP has decided to stop inventing and Mr. Kay is looking for work. Slashdot is reporting that HP has disbanded its Advanced Software Research Team more than likely part of Mark Hurds recently announced restructure. I don't know what it says about HP's future but it doesn't look good on the surface.

Here are a few of Mr. Kay's accomplishments

Can you imagine how many companies are going to be calling him today.

Hey Students! Get Homework help from SAS

Ted Conway's recent post at The Unoffical SAS Weblog suggests just that.

A SAS backed initiative with NC State "SAS Mentors Program" calls on SAS employees around the world to help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to become tomorrow’s leaders.

Its another great example of a unique company looking beyond the walls of its campus to work with the outside world. I've visited SAS several times over the years and have met Dr. Goodnight. He has a passion for education, technology and building culture.

I'm not surprised by the announce and commend them on the program.

The Supreme Court Rules on Peer to Peer file sharing

Earlier today the Supreme court handed down its ruling on Grokster v. M.G.M., which determined that file sharing networks and the makers of the software that enable them can be held financially liable for copyright infringement.

Braden Cox, Technology Counsel at the Competitive Enterprise Institute had the following to say “The Court faced a difficult decision with Grokster, both because intellectual property law has again had to confront the advent of a new technology and because a case like this challenges our society’s definition of ownership and fair use,” said Cox. “The net result in the short term will likely be a new round of lawsuits against existing file sharing firms, with song swappers moving quickly to non-U.S. peer-to-peer software. Unfortunately, the verdict will likely also have a chilling effect on innovation and may stifle the next generation of digital multimedia technology.”

If you are an active peer to peer participant you may want to start looking for an alternative. Get more on this story here.

Is HP Going to Sell its PC Division?

Hewlett Packard CEO Mark Hurd is starting to rock the HP boat and I'm not surprised. In what some analysts saw as a slap at Carly Fiorina he has re-separated the Printer and PC Divisions that Fiorina merged during her last days at the helm.

Having met Mark Hurd several times over the past couple years I would guess that making Fiorina look bad is not even on his radar. I predict that the separation will make it easier for HP to divest themselves of a division that is underperforming and hurting the bottom line of the company. I would imagine we will see HP leave the PC market all together. The low margin highly competitive marketplace has been left behind by many others including IBM

We'll have to wait and see but the separation of the divisions will make it harder to hide the poor performance of the group and I wouldn't expect Hurd to allow that issue to live in the public eye for long.

Umbria Communications - Understanding the Blogoshere and beyond

I was reading Blogspotting this afternoon and ran across a piece by Stephen Baker that he wrote about Umbria Communications. His discussion with Howard Kaushansky President of Umbria is worth the read.

I also had the opportunity to meet Howard Kaushansky a couple months back. Howard and I met at Starbucks in Boulder and a great conversation about his technology. Umbria's ability to analyze the unstructured world of Blogs, chats and discussion forums on a massive scale provides companies and marketers a unique view into the world of consumers.

I see Umbria as a great fit for any software firm looking to aggregate and analyze all of the various forums and website that cover, discuss or critique their solution.

Stephen does a great job elaborating so check out his Blog.

Ab Initio - A to Z

I'll be the first to admit that Ab Initio is a very interesting company largely because they choose to market and sell in ways that many find outside the norm. It appears that the folks at ITToolbox are definitely smitten. Over the past week or so they have covered Ab Initio in multiple ways. I enjoyed reading the blog posts and thought you might as well.
