On Friday judge Dale Kimball handed down his decision regarding SCO's claim that it owned the copyright to the Unix Operating system. The result of this suit removes the cloud that has hovered over the open source world causing many companies to be hesitant when embracing Linux as a business solution. IBM will be happy as well they were sued by SCO in 2003 over copyright issues stemming from Unix and Linux.

Several weeks back (7/19) the executive team at Netezza rang the bell to open the stock market and watched as their IPO of 9,000,000 shares of common stock hit the market. See stock symbol "NZ" for greater details. The stock opened at $12.00 at launch and closed Friday at $14.43 down a bit from its high of $18.40 but considering the volatile market this past week or two Netezza is performing quite well. Stocks aside I'm excited to see the appliance sector taking another huge step forward. It's clear with the IPO of Netezza that this solution space is moving quickly in the right direction. It makes me curious about what will happen in this space over the next year. I expect that we'll see some consolidation and I know that we will see new players enter the market.

If you want more information on the appliance sector download the study "Data Warehouse Appliances: Evolution or Revolution?" by Colin White and Richard Hackathorn just completed here at the Network.

Congratulations Netezza!

It doesn't happen often but occasionally I earn "Cool Dad Points" with my 14 year old daughter Amanda generally the easiest route to this accolade is by purchasing her clothes or cool electronics like a cell phone or iPod. More often than not I earn "Bad Dad Points" by my embarrassing parental comments and general uncool adult behavior.

Recently Tamara Dull posted a piece at her blog about my SecondLife (SL) exploits, its a fun read. While I don't think that SL is ready for prime time I do enjoy watching it evolve. Anyway, a while back I attended a meet-up in SL hosted by Cali Lewis the host of Geek Brief an extremely popular video podcaster. Each episode is watched by over 400,000 viewers. In short Cali is pretty famous. During the SL meet-up I (virtually) introduced my daughter to Cali and they chatted for a couple minutes (big cool dad points).

The interesting thing was how my 14 year old perceived the meeting, in her mind she had actually met the real Cali Lewis not just her avatar. It really makes you think about how SL could impact business and community in the future.

So back to "Cool Dad Points"....
The Gnomedex event that I am at allows me to meet and network with the many thought leaders on the Internet and yes occasionally earn "Cool Dad Points".

To continue my quest to convince all of you that I am a geek I am attending Gnomedex again this year. Its a unique event hosted by Chris Pirillo of Lockergnome attended by some of the most influential bloggers and technologists on the Internet (I am not included in that group). The event delivers a mixed group of content covering everything from Guy Kawasaki speaking on how to be an technology evangelist to Justin from Justin.tv talking about the perils of wearing a realtime webcam 24 hours a day.

In true Web 2.0 style you can watch a live feed of the event at uStream.tv.

Check out this funny recap of the Pacific Northwest Business Intelligence Summit from Tamara Dull's blog. Its times like this that I am reminded of how big a nerd I have become. I can only say that I am glad to be married because if I was single and this stuff got out about me I'd never get a date.
