Congratulations DataFlux! June 27, 2005The Supreme Court Rules on Peer to Peer file sharingEarlier today the Supreme court handed down its ruling on Grokster v. M.G.M., which determined that file sharing networks and the makers of the software that enable them can be held financially liable for copyright infringement. Braden Cox, Technology Counsel at the Competitive Enterprise Institute had the following to say “The Court faced a difficult decision with Grokster, both because intellectual property law has again had to confront the advent of a new technology and because a case like this challenges our society’s definition of ownership and fair use,” said Cox. “The net result in the short term will likely be a new round of lawsuits against existing file sharing firms, with song swappers moving quickly to non-U.S. peer-to-peer software. Unfortunately, the verdict will likely also have a chilling effect on innovation and may stifle the next generation of digital multimedia technology.” If you are an active peer to peer participant you may want to start looking for an alternative. Alok Shinde, director, information communication and technology practice, Frost and Sullivan, a global growth consulting company, says that the $33 million. Mr Shinde argues that consolidation in the BI market would happen very soon. “No other enterprise application area has seen this kind of growth. According to Frost and Sullivan the following vendors are finding traction in this growing market. Business Intelligence Solutions by Market Share Microsoft - 18% June 23, 2005Define the term "Customer"Ok, have you thought about it? Is a customer anyone who bought something this year? or someone who bought something ever? Maybe if you are in the shipping department it's someone who you shipped to? So which definition is correct? The point is that this lack of definition or business rule erodes the value of analytics. Monday I talked about the IDC Research study that reported for every $1 companies spend putting data into the system they are only spending $0.25 to utilize it. YUCK! The point is its an ever increasing challenge to most every company. Cerebra Inc. recently did a survey of attendees at the DAMA show and asked the following : 1. Consolidates the data into a data mart, data warehouse or ODS 2. Writes explicit code to do each data merge as needed 3. Uses a manual process to merge the data 4. Federates the data at runtime using and EII tool Vickie Farrell Vice President of Marketing for Cerebra stated. We believe that the organizations who attend DAMA are at the savvy end of the spectrum when it comes to data governance and managing data as a corporate asset. Many have mature data warehouse implementations. And yet, 43% of these companies say that they must resort to the use of specific code and/or manual processes for cross-functional queries. To paraphrase Vickie "consistent application of business rules and business policy across systems and groups within your organization" are critical. What does it say about the state of BI that so many companies are struggling with the quality and integration of data and applications? June 21, 2005Bridging the IT and Business GapThis isn't a new topic for any of us but it continues to be one worth discussing. In the July 15th issue of CIO Magazine You can find an insert from IDC Sponsored by Oracle titled Bridging the IT and Business Needs Gap by Dan Vesset. A couple interesting notes from the article: IDC research also points out an interesting desparity in spending. For every dollar spent on transaction processing apps, data capture and getting informnation into databases only $0.25 is spent getting data out for analytics. No thats a real problem. If you haven't checked out the web seminar hosted by myself and Claudia Imhoff titled Building a Total View of Your Customer you should. Claudia along with Daniel Mathieux of AAA make some great points about how important it is to bridge this gap. June 20, 2005Are Data Warehouse Appliances the Answer? It's an interesting debate as many of you know data warehouse appliances are getting a lot of traction in the market place. The leading solution providers in this space are making the news on our Network and other publications almost every week. I read a recent post on Duncan Lambs blog that seems to indicate a debate is brewing. Follow the links on his blog for more details (be aware that some links go to vendor written content). I think there is more than one way to address the ever-increasing data growth that virtually every company is facing. So far Appliances have demonstrated they are a solid alternative to addressing performance, scalability and low TCO. I'd like to hear from our readers regarding your thoughts on the subject. June 13, 2005Umbria Communications - Understanding the Blogoshere and beyondI was reading Blogspotting this afternoon and ran across a piece by Stephen Baker that he wrote about Umbria Communications. His discussion with Howard Kaushansky President of Umbria is worth the read. I also had the opportunity to meet Howard Kaushansky a couple months back. Howard and I met at Starbucks in Boulder and a great conversation about his technology. Umbria's ability to analyze the unstructured world of Blogs, chats and discussion forums on a massive scale provides companies and marketers a unique view into the world of consumers. I see Umbria as a great fit for any software firm looking to aggregate and analyze all of the various forums and website that cover, discuss or critique their solution. Stephen does a great job elaborating so check out his Blog. June 10, 2005More on Open Source Business IntelligenceLast week I posted about the growing importance of open source solutions in BI. Ab Initio - A to ZI'll be the first to admit that Ab Initio is a very interesting company largely because they choose to market and sell in ways that many find outside the norm. It appears that the folks at ITToolbox are definitely smitten. Over the past week or so they have covered Ab Initio in multiple ways. I enjoyed reading the blog posts and thought you might as well. June 9, 2005Is it me or is this dumb?Orlando International Airport is preparing to roll out a new program that would allow travelers to purchase a biometric ID card in order to speed-through the airport security lines. The kicker is that a card holder is guaranteed NOT to be selected for extra screening. I am a true fan of technology (geek at heart)as well as a very frequent traveler and I can clearly see the appeal of this program to a normal traveler. But I can't help but think that a would be terrorist might be able to scrape up 80 bucks to make his life easier. Check out the Clear Registered Traveler Program I really would love to hear your comments on this one.
