It should be no surprise that IBM validates Linux distributions for their DB2 Universal Database for Linux, UNIX and Windows.

Although at the moment only distros from Red Hat (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and Novell (Open Enterprise Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server) are on the "recommended and validated" list, half a dozen other distributions have been through the rigorous validation process.

Ubuntu Linux, which received certification earlier this month, is the latest addition to the list.

Ubuntu is an up-and-coming non-commercial and totally free Linux distribution that's been getting a huge amount of attention over the past year or so because it is just so good. Brainchild of Mark Shuttleworth, space tourist and founder of Thawte, Ubuntu combines an aggressive twice-yearly upgrade release schedule with an "alway free" policy and support for many languages to produce a Linux distribution meant to be used by anyone, anywhere.
