2010 Vision Award for Business Impact

Category: Performance Management
Steadman Hawkins Clinic submitted by River Logic

Business Drivers: Both hospital administrators and caregivers sought to improve productivity and quality of care by optimizing hospital resources and activities according to financially based what-if scenarios at Steadman Hawkins Clinic. However, the physicians' activities - the primary drivers of system resources, costs, revenue, etc., were not quantified and measured in a manner that provided true cost-benefit analyses. The existing practice depended largely on billing data to determine performance benchmarks. Billing data, with error rates as high as 30%, was only available after care delivery. The clinic needed an integrated representation of system-wide activity to support operational, tactical and strategic decision making as well as performance management.

Benefits: Prior to the implementation of IDS Planner from River Logic, the system of care could not be evaluated in holistic terms: Decision making was suboptimal, physicians did not know their operational and financial contribution to the system, and investments were often wasted. Using IDS Planner administrators can now determine how hospital activity is generated, including referrals and ancillaries and the corresponding financial impacts. In addition, IDS Planner leverages the underlying causal model to support extensive "what-if" analyses.

Business Impact: IDS Planner removes waste from the system by improving decision making and quantifying physician-related activities in financial terms. IDS Planner also helps to maximize the value of existing information assets and IT investments - particularly existing EMR, billing and scheduling systems. Integrated systems reduce errors and eliminate tasks that erode the quality of care and dilute GHS's financial performance. Through holistic representation and modeling of the pertinent activities and resources, administrators and physicians can now develop collaborative, needs-based solutions and programs. IDS Planner, which delivers information to the physicians' PDA, enables them to make timely and accurate decisions. IDS Planner provides an overlay of cost on treatment algorithms to present cost benefit to evidence-based medicine.

Judge's Comment: "I am impressed by the use of River Logic models applied here because finding the right balance between financial performance and quality of care can be a challenge in healthcare " Nancy Williams, DecisionPath Consulting
