2010 Vision Award for Business Impact

Category: Data Integration
Compassion International submitted by Composite Software

Business Driver: Compassion International's executive leadership, having witnessed growth from ten thousand children sponsored in one country in 1962 to over one million sponsored in 26 countries in 2009, looked ahead to see that sponsored children growing to four million and beyond over the next decade. They recognized that their current IT infrastructure would never support these volumes and that IT should not be the bottleneck when children's well being is at stake. As a result, IT management was given the top-down charter to reengineer the IT infrastructure to support four plus million sponsored children. The Ministry Information Library (MIL) initiative is the result.

Benefits: With this modern, agile information infrastructure in place, Compassion's 150-person IT team has improved responsiveness to new end-user requests by 25%, especially important when disasters occur, such as the earthquake in Haiti. Further, the MIL more easily supports new Web 2.0 collaboration applications, thereby helping to improve communication between children and their sponsors. Finally, total application development and maintenance costs have been reduced, lessening administrative costs and thus freeing more funds for charitable work

Business Impact: While the absolute impact of the MIL to impoverished children worldwide is nearly impossible to measure, the impact on Compassion's business has been strong. Compassion has already seen greater agility to respond to crises as well meet the IT needs for new types of programs such as the Child Survival Program and Leadership Development programs that complement the original Child Sponsorship program. Further, Compassion has already achieved lower IT costs (approximately 25-35% less per project) which allows more funding to flow directly to the sponsored children and programs.

Judge's Comment: "The Composite Software submission stood out for me because of the impact the solution had on Compassion International and its ability to increase its humanitarian efforts due to costs savings realized with the implementation of a new IT infrastructure." Barry Devlin, 9sight Consulting
