2009 Vision Award for Business Impact

Category: Operational BI
Implementation Site: Nygård International
Solution Provider: MicroStrategy

Description: Nygård International is a fashion company that designs and markets women's fashion apparel to a broad range of retail clients.

Business impact: Reports are displayed in an easy to view and easy to navigate format, enabling mobile users to review, analyze and interact with important data at their convenience. The adoption of mobile applications is spreading and has become a core component of their systems process requirements. The key is collaboration and rapid execution with all parties in the field to make decisions immediately on the front lines, not in the boardroom after the fact.

Business driver: Millions of dollars worth of orders are placed daily and must be shipped on time. Nygård's BI platform supports real-time information access, and they wanted to support their mobile workers with timely information on their BlackBerrys to enable real-time operational decision making. Every application and platform has to extend to the mobile workforce.

Business value: Nygård's mobile workers received the same reports on their mobile devices as they do on their desktops without the need for reformatting or retrofitting existing reports. Even large reports fit within the compact screen size of a BlackBerry smartphone. Savings on printers, ink, paper and support alone was $33,000 on a $12,000 investment. The soft ROI is more compelling and in line with corporate strategy to become "greener," thus saving substantial economic and natural resources.

Judging comments: "This is the best example of operational BI mainly for its remote BlackBerry application. It is an innovative way to track sales performance and shipped and available replenishment inventory with images at all levels from SKU location up to product group and country as well as the ability to sort from best to worst." "This implementation was done well and exemplifies the incorporation of mobile into BI."
