Business drivers: The healthcare business and its data model are extremely complex, thus achieving integration would have been a challenge for an organization of any size). While the technology enabled this project, a great deal of credit goes to the executives who sponsored these initiatives and the employees who implemented the changes.

Business impact: Increased visibility and accountability contributed to $3.1 million in savings and revenue and increased staff productivity. Another impact was improved operational efficiency and management accountability. The project was sponsored by one of the organization's top three executives and the initial project led to subsequent initiatives and increased adoption of BI.

Judging comments: "St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital blew the other entries away for a number of reasons: biggest impact, hard dollar ROI, expanded to multiple projects enterprise wide, also small hospital in tough industry with a complex data mart. Lastly they were losing money and placed a big bet on BI ... and it paid off."
